But where would be the Mayfair and Park Lane of Doncaster?

These could be the burning questions soon – as a game manafacturer has placed Doncaster on a 25-strong shortlist for places which could get their own local version of the classic board game Monopoly.

It is one of 25 towns that could land its own themed version of the game.

Others in the contest include Wakefield, Beverley, Pontefract and Chesterfield regionally, as well as Whitby and Ripon further north.

An announcement of the winning place is scheduled for next Thursday, March 5.

And the makers of the game say Doncaster is very much one of the favourites to ‘Pass GO’.

Afolabi Omotola, from Winning Moves UK, who would be manufacturing the game under license from the Monopoly brand, owned by Hasbro, said: “We have been studying 25 different places from Whitby to Chesterfield.

“Along our way we have discovered that Doncaster has lots of hidden treasures – absolutely essential as we need around 30 leading landmarks to fill any winning board so, yes, Doncaster is very much a front runner.”

Following the announcement, the public would be invited to vote for landmarks to feature in the winning game, with the successful regional game themed in sets: from tourism to heritage, culture to shopping, hotels to sport, education to business, and charity to travel.

The Chance and Community Chest cards would be largely customised as well.

So, for example, if Doncaster wins one card could reward players for picking the winner of the St Leger, Doncaster Racecourse’s showpiece race, famous as the oldest classic race in the UK.

If Wakefield was to win then players could advance to The Hepworth Museum.

Mr Afolabi added: “All of the multi-coloured Monopoly property spaces will be exclusively customised to the leading landmarks of the winning place. Additionally, the four train stations would take on a travel theme and most of the Chance and Community Chest cards would be customised.

“All will be revealed next week. Good luck Doncaster!”
