Beloved Doncaster woman celebrates 100th birthday

Children of a Doncaster woman who is turning 100 years old remember her early life fondly, she is celebrated her long life with a socially distant tea party in the residential home she is living in.

Eva Seaby celebrated her 100th birthday on August 29.

Her son, Steven Nicholson, aged 73 from Dunsville, said: “She was a grafter.

“We lost my Dad when I was three years old which meant she had to go out into the workplace to keep a roof over our heads.

“She’s not really had the best life, she remarried but lost that husband also.”

In her younger years, Eva worked as a cleaner for the Morley Factory on Wheatley Hall Road.

She then went on to clean for the manager of that factory who lived in Wheatley Hills.

“She fetched two kids up which is an achievement in itself,” Steven continued.

“I remember she used to take me to the Hexthorpe Flats when I was younger because they had music players.

“There were bagpipes and dancers, we went there often.”

Eva celebrated her 100th birthday at the care home with a tea party in the garden.

There was bunting and cake for the occasions.

Eva’s daughter, Shirley Taylor, aged 80 from Scawsby, said: “She was very strict when we were young and she has always been a very private person.

“I remember her getting remarried at St Mary’s and being there for the birth of my son which was her first grandchild.”

Eva enjoyed days out at Scarborough where she would stay at the Victoria hotel.

She would frequently visit the city of York and loved to attend the Great Yorkshire Show.

“100 years is a great milestone,” Shirley said.

“She’s suffered from a few falls and has been in and out of the hospital so it’s wonderful that she’s got to this age.”

Marie Shaw, Manager at Thorndene residential care home, said: “She’s a very quiet lady.

“She’s always doing her hair.”
