Applications open for charity scheme which helps Doncaster causes

Megan Booker from Woodlands works as a Co-op member pioneer and throughout lockdown she has moved her community work online.

She has been running themed competitions with prizes aimed at getting children to learn about topics such as fairtrade goods and WW2.

Megan said: “I have been trying to get people involved through social media.

“I would usually be able to put on community events but due to the coronavirus I have had to move things online.

“I started running competitions when the VE Day event I had planned was cancelled.”

Megan ran a children's colouring competition, where three winners won an art pack filled with pens, glitter, and glue as well as a WW2 themed baking competition.

Children had to use historically accurate recipes as well as foods that would have been included in ration packs.

“I ran a best dressed window competition where the winner got a selection of cakes from Dream Bakes and a takeaway from Posh Pizza,” continued Megan.

“And a crackle cookie competition where the children had to use fairtrade ingredients.

“There have also been fairtrade quizzes which got children to do their own research online.”

Megan says that one factor of the competitions and quizzes is to help parents find activities for their children during lockdown as well as keeping community spirits high.

She said: “Everyone is feeling isolated at the moment.

“We haven’t been able to see our family and friends.

“But there are still community activities going on, we don’t have to sit at home all the time.”

Megan recommends using the app Co-operate to find activities going on in local communities.

Megan aged 28 is one of the youngest member pioneers in the area. She has also been named a local hero by the Co-op after she started the All Women Woodlands support group.

The Co-op is currently looking for more causes in Doncaster to add to their charity scheme called the Local Community Fund.
