New drop-in sessions launch for families with Deaf children, CODAs, and carers

A series of new family sign language drop-in sessions start next week (Monday 9 November) at The Carr Fenton Foundation.

The Yorkshire Family Sign Group run by Abi Hodkinson, the family sign language mentor at The Carr Fenton Foundation, will welcome families with Deaf children, children of Deaf adults (CODA), and carers.

Abi said; “We are really excited to be launching these new, free, informal, friendly sessions.

“The flexible sessions will enable families to drop-in and go as they please. During term time the sessions, which run from 9am – 12noon, are for children aged 0-5 years and there will be sensory activities taking place.

“During half term (February and April) the sessions will run between 9.30am and 11.30am for 0–9-year-olds and 12.30pm and 2.30pm for 10–15-year-olds and activities will be created to suit interests.”

The sessions will provide a welcoming space for parents, carers and families to explore British Sign Language (BSL), ask questions, seek advice and receive support from the Family Sign Language Mentor.

“Each week will feature a different BSL taster topic, alongside fun, interactive adult-led and child-led activities designed to encourage communication, language development and family engagement.

“Families will be able to meet others, share experiences and build confidence in using BSL together,” added Abi.

No previous BSL knowledge is required and there is no need to attend every week.

For families seeking additional or more personalised support, one-to-one mentoring sessions can also be arranged.

The sessions will take place at Greenaway Lodge, The Carr Fenton Foundation, Leger Way, Doncaster, DN2 6AY. For further information or to arrange a one-to-one session, please contact [email protected]
