Complaints have been made that removing trees will reduce the amount of water that is retained during heavy rain. Concerns have also been raised that the removal of trees reduces the screening of the tracks, and means that the noise coming from the railway is greater as a result.

Richard Owens, head of maintenance for Network Rail, said the organisation was constantly balancing the needs of the environment and those who live by the railway with the needs and safety of those who use and rely on railways.

He said: “Network Rail is currently carrying out safety critical work to remove trees and other vegetation from the line between Sheffield and Doncaster. Work has taken place to remove trees which could fall onto the line, impact on the safety of the railway and disrupt train services.

“We understand the concerns of residents in regards to flooding following the severity of flooding in South Yorkshire in recent months. We’d like to reassure residents that we continue to work with stakeholders in the area to manage the risk of flooding to the railway and properties near the railway.”

Resident Michelle Faulkner complained to Network Rail over the actions, which she believes will see trees removed all the way from Mexborough to Doncaster. She said the Government had said there was a need for more trees to help counter flooding.

“Network rail are cutting them all down all the way into Doncaster,” she said.

Ward Coun Ian Pearson previously called for trees to be planted near the Don in Conisbrough to take water, but believes the station is too high to flood.
