“South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue continue to work closely with Doncaster Council and other organisations to bring the incident to an end as soon as possible.”

Fire chiefs have pressed home the message for people to stay away – and not to have barbecues in public.

The statement added: “Please do not go for a walk on Hatfield Moor – the whole area is the site of an operational incident. Leave the BBQs at home, be extra careful when disposing of cigarettes and put litter in a bin or take it home with you.”

Over the weekend, some areas were close to being fully extinguished with crews working around the clock to extinguish the flames.

Hatfield Moor is one of Britain’s largest peat bogs, with high levels of peat helping to fuel the fire.
