Doncaster shop boss 'devastated' by ram raid attack but re-opens within 24 hours of crime

The boss of a Doncaster Co-op which was ramraided just hours after opening for the first time said he and his staff were ‘devastasted’ by the raid

But the store on Barnby Dun High Street is open again already after a major repair effort at the shop following the attack on Friday night.

Employees worked around the clock to reopen the store following the raid which saw a cash dispenser machine ATM stolen after theves had used a digger to get access to it.

Store manager Neil Holmes said: “After being so proud of opening for the first time and enjoying a great first day, we were all devastated to find out we had been targeted by thieves after being open for less than 24 hours.

“But our co-operative spirit kicked into gear and we all worked around the clock to make sure that our store could safely reopen as soon as possible for our new community.

“We opened the doors less than 24 hours on from when the incident happened and have been overwhelmed by the messages of support from the people of Barnby Dun.

“We are delighted to be part of the community here and our hard work to reopen so quickly showcases what it means to all of us here at Central England Co-op.”

The incident left the building with some external damage which was quickly repaired and made safe for customers and members.

The society is working closely with South Yorkshire Police as they continue their investigation.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting incident number 4 of July 4 2020.

But the pub had been closed for two years when the scheme was proposed and Doncaster Council planning officer Alicia Murray had said the building in its current form was ‘somewhat of an eyesore’.
