Askern Lake has been hit by a number of thefts of fish during lockdown, with people apparently stealing the creatures to eat.

Now Askern Lake Fishing Club, which controls fishing on the lake, has said that angling has been suspended.

In a post on its Facebook page, a spokesman said: “In light of the recent incidents of poaching, fishing on the lake is suspended pending an Environmental Agency investigation.”

The lake, which is situated on the main A19 road through Askern has reportedly been victim to several attacks under cover of darkness with poachers working the lake to steal and eat carp swimming in its waters.

During lockdown, angling was one of the sports banned by the Government but in recent weeks, fishing has been allowed to resume.

We have contacted the Environment Agency for a response.
