Abusive Crowle man given five-year ASBO

In an unprecedented move, NLC took 65-year-old John Carney (pictured), of Lindsey Drive, to court, after a series of incidents that have been described as “unacceptable behaviour” against various members of staff.

Appearing before Scunthorpe Magistrates Court, Carney was given the five year ASBO and was also ordered to pay costs of £16,894 to the council. The ASBO means that Carney must not, in the next five years, engage in any act or behaviour directed at, or relating to, any member or employee of North Lincolnshire Council in an attempt to stop him from carrying out any further anti social acts. Simon Batt, Head of legal services at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Following Mr Carney’s series of threatening behaviour to council employees, an application was made to the North Lincolnshire Magistrates Court for an Anti-Social Behaviour Order.

“This application was successful and Mr Carney must now ensure that he does not behave in an anti-social manner that is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to employees and councillors of North Lincolnshire Council. The ASBO is for five years and Mr Carney was ordered to pay more than £16,500 in costs.

“The council will not tolerate anti-social behaviour and will take action to prevent it. We are very pleased with this outcome, as it demonstrates that anti-social behaviour in any form is unacceptable.”

A staff member, who did not wish to be identified, said: “He has been abusive when speaking to members of staff, using threatening and abusive language.
