The national roll-out of the vaccine to immunise people against coronavirus is continuing to gather pace, with an estimated 2.33 million jabs given so far and the programme being extended to include the over-70s.

Currently, the vaccination is only being given in vaccination centres using large-scale venues, hospital hubs and local vaccination services, made up of sites led by general practice teams and pharmacy teams through community pharmacies.

The Government has not yet responded to direct offers from brewery and bar chains, BrewDog and Loungers, respectively, to allow their premises to be used in the fight against the virus.

But as our pubs, community centres and wedding venues remain closed during lockdown three, kind-hearted pub owners, managers and staff from across Doncaster are lining up to allow their venues to be used as vaccination hubs – should the Government need them.

One such venue is Thornhurst Manor in Holme Lane, Holme which usually holds 90 weddings every year but was only able to host two in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Business manager, Laurie Murray, said he feels the venue has received some “great support” from Doncaster Council and the Government since the pandemic began and so wants to help if possible.

“We’ve got a car park that holds 300 cars, lots of outdoor spaces for social distancing and three function rooms that hold 130 people each,” said Laurie.

All pharmacies should be used as part of the vaccine programme as they are trusted, have the expertise and are local to every community. He added: “We’ve got the infrastructure for it so we’d like to utilise it if possible.”

Heather Morris of Hatfield Main Working Men's Club, Stainforth says her venue is “massive” with a concert room that holds 250 people and car parking for 30+ vehicles.

She said: “We want to help if we can. Let’s get it done, and try to get back to normal as soon as we can.”
