The best and worst places in South Yorkshire for food hygiene

New analysis of Food Standards Agency data shows Doncaster has the highest share of poorly-rated food premises in South Yorkshire. As of 19 July 2026, 4.89% of its rated premises score 2 or below, with an average rating of 4.53 out of 5.

Ranked worst to best across South Yorkshire's four authorities:

Doncaster – 4.89% rated 2 or below (average 4.53)
Barnsley – 3.23% rated 2 or below (average 4.70)
Sheffield – 2.80% rated 2 or below (average 4.61)
Rotherham – 1.20% rated 2 or below (average 4.83)

South Yorkshire as a whole sits at 3.56% rated 2 or below. Nationally, just under 3% of premises fall into that bracket, and 78% hold the top rating of 5.
