Bonfire Night safety warning issued by hospital trust
Residents celebrating Bonfire Night are being urged to follow safety guidance and choose the appropriate NHS service if they are injured.
Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) issued the reminder ahead of events on Thursday 5 November and into the following weekend. Burns, eye injuries and other preventable accidents are treated by hospitals each year after incidents involving fireworks, sparklers and bonfires.
Dr Nick Mallaband, Chief Medical Officer at DBTH, said: “We want everyone celebrating Bonfire Night to have a great time, but it's important to remember that fireworks and bonfires can be dangerous if proper care isn't taken.
“Taking a few simple steps to stay safe can help prevent painful injuries and avoid an unnecessary trip to hospital. If you do need medical attention, it's also important to choose the right service for your needs.”
The Minor Injuries Unit at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough can treat non-life-threatening conditions including minor burns and scalds, cuts, grazes, sprains, strains, simple fractures, wound infections and minor eye injuries.
The walk-in service, at Montagu Hospital, Adwick Road, Mexborough (S64 0AZ), is open seven days a week from 9am to 9pm, with last admission at 8pm. NHS 111 is available online or by phone for urgent medical advice, while people facing life-threatening emergencies should call 999.
DBTH advises people to buy fireworks from reputable retailers, follow the instructions and remain at a safe distance. Children using sparklers should always be supervised, and spent sparklers placed in water. People should never return to a lit firework.
Bonfires should be kept away from buildings, fences and trees. Petrol and other flammable liquids must not be used to start or revive them, while woodpiles should be checked for animals before lighting. Anyone unsure about holding their own display is advised to attend an organised celebration.
