World sport: McIlroy ready for US PGA, Rio water not to blame for athlete illness, Irish FA fined for firework thrown by Romanian fan

The world number one golfer ruptured his ankle ligaments in a football game in July, forcing him out of The Open.

But he’s back in action this week, and will play alongside 2015 major champions Jordan Spieth and Zach Johnson, when the US PGA Championship tees off at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

The abnormal levels of bacteria in the water at Rio may not be the cause of illness that struck the US rowing team.

Thirteen rowers fell ill after competing in the World Junior Championships, a test event at the lagoon that will be used in next year’s Olympics.

US Rowing chief Glenn Merry said it was “easy but irresponsible” to blame the water for the diarrhoea outbreak.

World Rowing has called for tests on pollution levels in the water, after Brazilian authorities admitted their targets to improve the water quality would not be met.

And the Irish FA have been fined £2,120 by UEFA, after a firework was thrown by a Romanian fan during an international match at Windsor Park in June.

A press photographer, Darren Kidd, was hit and injured by the explosive.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that UEFA failed to inform the IFA of the fine before it was made known to the newspaper, and the Romanian FA is also facing punishment over the behaviour of their fans.
