RACING TIP OF THE DAY
Here is my main selection for today’s racing:
Newbury 3.30 WIN
Scotland might have said No to independence, but it’s a big Yes Please to one of their biggest racedays of the year at Ayr today. My selections for both the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup and Silver Cup can be found in SCOOP’S SIX HORSES TO FOLLOW, but another sprinter gets the nod for TIP OF THE DAY in this Group Three contest at Newbury. It might seem bonkers plumping for a horse that finished stone last, 17th of 17, on his latest run. But Bryan Smart’s powerful four-year-old ran much better than his finishing position suggests in what was, after all, a Group One contest -- the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock. And what’s more, he beat the winner of that race on his previous outing, also in top-level company, in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York. A repeat of that form -- and also his close third at Glorious Goodwood during the summer -- should suffice on this return to his best 5f trip, especially as he’s proven on rain-softened ground.
