RACING TIP OF THE DAY
Wednesday 8th October
SPIRITING
Nottingham 2.20 WIN
I am a shade concerned that connections might be thinking first and foremost of protecting the handicap mark Luca Cumani’s two-year-old colt will acquire after this, his third run. But on what he’s achieved so far, the son of Invincible Spirit stands out as a worthy favourite for this backend maiden. So well did he travel on debut at Newmarket in August that it beggared belief he finished only seventh. Failure to pick up in the soft ground was possibly to blame, but then he went through his last race, when second at Yarmouth, with similar ease, so today’s drop in trip from 7f to 6f makes perfect sense. Sooner or later, he needs to start repaying the whopping fee of 450,000 guineas that he fetched as a yearling, so let’s hope he can get a really good card at Colwick Park off to a flying start.
