The Dons were the first to threaten – winger Tom Halliday going close trying to dive over from a long pass.

The home side survived a spell of pressure on their own line prior to returning to the attack and opening the scoring with a ninth-minute try in the corner by winger Sam Doherty after full-back Jack Logan had linked up in attack in the Wakefield 20.

Trinity levelled the scores on 13 minutes, wing Josh Slingsby crossing out wide from a long pass.

The home side regained the lead on 18 minutes after centre Jason Tali used his strength to claim a close-range try following some neat build-up play. Logan added the extras to make it 10-4.

There was a let-off for the Dons on 22 minutes when a Trinity player knocked on with line at his mercy after Logan had fumbled the ball.

The Dons continued to concede penalties at regular intervals and Trinity levelled the scores for a second time when second-rower Harry Dodd weaved his way over from close range near enough for Connor Bailey to convert.

The Dons hit back through Halliday who beat his opposite number to a high kick to the corner. Logan again added the extras.

Tali’s momentum earned him a second try on 36 minutes which Logan again converted from touch to make it 22-10.

Trinity enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the first ten minutes of the second half but fell further behind on 51 minutes when Ross Peltier crashed over for another converted try.

Both sides added two further tries - new skipper Brad Foster and trialist Ben Howe – a 70m interception – sharing out the Doncaster touchdowns.

Dons: Logan, Doherty, Rickett, Tali, Halliday, Boas, Chase, Wilkinson, Carter, Douglas, England, Ollett, Foster. Subs: Peltier, Green, Lawton, Howe, Holdstock.
