“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Turton (Turts) due to Covid alongside other complications and send our sympathy and condolences to his children Andrew and Sue and partner Janet during this difficult time,” De Mulder wrote on Knights’ official website.

“Turts played as hooker for Pontefract RUFC and became a member of DRFC in the late 1980s when he retired from playing.

“He then became a stalwart of the club, firstly as 1st XV touch judge and latterly as team and logistics manager up to the present day.

“Turts was a fine example of giving his time voluntarily over 30 years to DRFC for which we are all extremely grateful.

“After winning games he always greeted me with “We are the boys Tony” and “There aren’t many of us about you know”.

“Turts was one of the the nicest men that I have ever known and will be sorely missed.

“Goodbye old friend.”

Reflecting on more than 800 games with Knights, Turton was asked in 2019 about his best memories at the club.

He told drfc.co.uk: “There are many, the promotions, the Yorkshire Cup wins.

“One of my favourites is reaching the Intermediate final at Twickenham. We lost to a controversial decision but getting there and the whole event was amazing.

“Also the top four play-off final at Bristol against them and playing in front of 16,000 and we beat them.

“That was a memorable night that I don’t think many people will forget.”

Turton’s funeral service will take place at Rose Hill Crematorium this Thursday at 12.30pm.
