The Doncaster Rovers Saturday League hopes to launch later this year, if and when it is safe for amateur sport to resume.

It will replace the now defunct Doncaster Senior League.

League secretary Chris Daines said: “Most grassroots football is in decline at the moment and the Doncaster Senior League is the latest one which was unable to continue.

“That was mainly down to a lack of teams and a lack of interest in joining a league which doesn’t offer anything in return.

“I’ve worked really hard for 18 months to come up with something to take it forward. I spoke to Sheffield Hallamshire County FA and created a new league with Doncaster Rovers agreeing to sponsor us.

“The Doncaster Rovers Saturday League currently has 21 clubs signed up with a couple months to go before the deadline for entries closes.

“Playing our cup finals at the Keepmoat Stadium is a massive incentive for players. We’ve also made it attractive and affordable to join. It’s just £50 which includes league fees, cup fees and player registrations.”

The league is open to new teams, reserve teams and development teams, and features flexible kick off times, FA referees and rolling subs.

In line with FA requirements, the league has planned for starts in mid-August, late September and mid-November due to Covid-19.
