The 46-year-old, who had been in charge at the Keepmoat for 19 months, leaves Rovers in sixth place in League One to take over a Wednesday side currently sitting in 23rd place in the Championship and six points from safety.

Andy Butler has been named boss until the end of the season.

But news of Moore’s exit has been met with disappointment by the Rovers hierarchy, with chairman David Blunt saying: “We are disappointed that Darren has chosen to leave the club part way through what has been a season full of promise.

"We have made significant efforts to support Darren over the past 18 months and ensure he was able to build a team capable of challenging in the top six. This has included supporting him through the past two transfer windows despite the difficult financial circumstances.”

Unsurprisingly, Rovers fans have been left angry and ‘baffled’ by Moore’s move across South Yorkshire.

Let’s take a look at what they’re saying on Twitter.

@challo_drfc No idea what the appeal is and makes McCann look good.

@AnthonyOgden98 Baffled more than anything, would’ve rather him left on the Friday rather than taking the team Saturday knowing he’d be gone by the weekend.

@Donnybarmyarmy I don’t really know what the board can do. A bit like Whiteman, what example does it set to the players if you have a manager in charge who doesn’t want to be there? I’m gutted but we have no choice but to push on.

@TedDRFC Still not a clue why he's done it.

@PhilipCDodd All that talk at his interview with #DRFC about buying into the whole Club Doncaster thing was just until another club waved a larger wad of cash. We know there’s little loyalty left in football, but the speed of this is so quick it looks like he couldn’t get away fast enough.

@Rogers_Richardd Good riddance if he doesn’t wanna be at club then bye. Still hopeful for the season, good squad of players. Think Butler will allow them to mix it up and add another dimension to our play.

@HenryWoodNew The board backed him as manager more than anyone else over the last eight or nine years and as soon as he’s assembled his squad, he leaves for a team in ownership turmoil. Bizarre move and clearly the Mr Nice Man persona was all a front and he didn’t buy into the club’s ambition all along.

@JT__90 Speechless and gutted! No loyalty in football. Why build something with success in sight and leave to certain failure, McCann 2.0. Managers come and go we just need to get players going again and finish in play-offs. 100 per cent back the board.

@josh_dainty I can’t think of any reason other than a bigger pay check for why he has decided to go there. They sack managers freely and have been quite poorly run in recent times. I’m just hoping for a reaction similar to the one we had when Saunders left for Wolves, in Andy we trust.
