The new Rovers boss will work with his squad for the first time from June 25 and has pencilled in a spell away from Cantley Park.

Covid 19 restrictions will prevent a trip abroad for the club – who have visited La Manga, Spain in recent years – but Wellens believes taking the squad away will be hugely beneficial as he looks to make his mark on what will be a new look group.

“On the 25th of June we’ll be back for two days testing,” he said. “We’ll have the Saturday and Sunday off and then we’ll start the proper sessions from there.

“I think it’s ten days until the first friendly.

“We’ll be getting a camp. It’ll not be abroad, which we would have liked because I believe when they work in the sun, players take on more information.

“Hopefully, the weather will be a lot better than it has been recently.

“We’ll be having three or four days away because I think it’s important, especially if you’re getting new players in.

“It was really difficult last year for any loan players to integrate with the squad because of Covid rules.

“We have an opportunity this year where we can go away for three or four days and we’ll take advantage of that because that will be the start of the spirit in the dressing room coming together.

“I don’t think any team is successful without having spirit in the camp.”
