Doncaster Rovers will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since February when they take on Everton Under-21s in the EFL Trophy.

Rovers finally got their first league win of the season at the weekend after they beat Forest Green 2-1 thanks to Ben Close’s injury-time goal, which he later admitted was intended as a cross.

They now have the chance to follow that up with their first competitive win at the Eco-Power Stadium since April.

Doncaster Rovers v Everton Under-21s

A quick reunion, possibly

Rovers pushed Everton’s first team all the way in the Carabao Cup last month, eventually losing 2-1 after two goals in the final ten minutes.

A host of first-team stars were involved for the Toffees that night, with few expected back this evening. Unused sub Tyler Onyango could be involved but his Under-21 teammates Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Dobbin have both been involved at first-team level recently.

The EFL Trophy begins

A few weeks later than billed after the Mansfield clash was postponed due to injuries in both camps, Doncaster Rovers begin their EFL Trophy, formerly the Papa Johns Trophy, campaign at home to Everton Under-21s tonight (7pm kick-off).

Rovers boss Grant McCann has said he plans to take the competition seriously although his squad depth may be tested by an ongoing injury crisis, with 13 players unavailable last weekend. Still, expect to see the likes of Louie Marsh, Bobby Faulkner, Tyler Roberts and Deji Sotona involved tonight. There could also be some involvement for people like Jack Goodman and Will Flint, who have both been recalled from loan in recent weeks to provide cover.

We are expecting to see Tommy Rowe involved tonight as the three-match suspension he is currenly serving, which will be over after Saturday’s visit of Gillingham, does not apply to this competition.
