Local football: Denaby Main suffer promotion setback

Denaby Main suffered a setback in their Division One title hopes as they were beaten for only the second time this season.

Main were underwhelming as they fell off the pace at the summit, as Sheffield Caribbean prevailed 2-0 to leave Main five off the top.

The game started poorly for both sides as passes went astray, and that set the tempo for the rest of the game.

Caribbean took the lead when a cross eluded everyone, and with a bit of help from the wind found its way into net.

Main tried to play their way back into the game, but to no avail, and the visitors were further ahead soon afterwards.

A loose pass on the edge of the box saw Caribbean’s striker react quickest, and his shot looked a tame effort until a hug bobble took it over Pears and into the corner.

The second half saw Main have chances to get back into the game as Daniel Phillips got in one on one, but his shot lacked power, before Michael Wren’s effort was cleared off the line.

Phillips also turned on the edge of the box and got a shot away which just went wide late on.

Main host midtable Silkstone United this Saturday as they look to get their Division One promotion bid back on track.
