Doncaster Rovers will progress to the Papa Johns Trophy knockout stage if they avoid defeat to South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.

All four teams in Group E can still qualify for the regionalised round of 32 but Rovers head into the last round of fixtures in pole position with five points.

The group winners will earn themselves a home draw in the next round, which takes place on November 30.

Doncaster and Barnsley have not played each other competitively since March 2019.

The situation in Group E

In short, all four teams can still qualify.

Doncaster top the table with five points and will reach the regionalised round of 32 if they avoid defeat (regardless of whether they lose the penalty shoot-out in the event of a draw). They will guarantee themselves top spot and a home draw in the next round with a win.

Barnsley are currently third on three points and a worse goal difference than Lincoln in second. The Imps play Newcastle U21 in their final game next Tuesday.

Michael Duff’s side will qualify with a win - potentially at the expense of Rovers - but may need a significant goal swing in their favour if they are to top the group.

Doncaster could lose and still qualify, but would be reliant on results elsewhere going their way.

A possible tactical switch?

It makes a change to have a Papa Johns Trophy fixture with something significant riding on it. Rovers need to give fringe players minutes but could also give themselves a huge shot in the arm with a good performance and result tonight.

The jury is still out on their progress this season - as was evident with Saturday’s boos - and this one is far from a dead rubber, so motivtion will not be an issue.

Barnsley are bringing the best part of 1,000 fans across South Yorkshire tonight. Dare I say, we might even get some atmosphere for this one unlike the Newcastle game. The Reds can also still qualify, so have something to play for themselves.
