Anderson suffered a severe concussion during Rovers’ defeat to Fleetwood Town ten days ago and has been following the Football Association’s protocol for recovery after a head injury.

Fejiri Okenabirhie will also be assessed as he recovers from an ankle injury which kept him out of Wednesday’s loss to Accrington Stanley.

“Those are the two we’ll be focusing on in training on Friday,” Rovers boss Darren Moore said.

“Both of them had outings on Thursday so it’s just about assessing those two to decide whether they will be fit and well enough for Saturday.

“We’ll know more later.”

Anderson will carry out the final stage of the concussion protocol on Friday, involving full contact training, and Moore says no risks will be taken over the skipper’s return.

He said: “He’s just finalising bits in training and getting the contact back on the ball which is the most important thing.

“We have to be mindful at each part of the stage. He’s at the last stage but he’s still in that protocol so we’re not out of the woods yet.

“I’ve said all along that we have to make sure he’s right and he’s well.

“He’s been getting checked every single day as he’s been stepping up his work and there’s been a smooth transition with each step of those.

“And we’ll continue that on Friday.”

Matt Smith will return to the squad after being rested for the Accrington game.

And James Coppinger is available again after completing a week of full training.

Moore said: “We’re delighted to have James back. We feel now he’s had a week’s training he’s had the volume he’s needed.

“We’re pleased to have someone of his ilk back among the squad.”

Moore also confirmed that Josh Sims is on the verge of starting matches after his gradual return to action following his hamstring injury.

He said: “Josh has been getting volume in training and he’s been coming on for minutes.

“One thing I’ll say to the likes of Josh, Copps and John Bostock is they’re getting stronger as the weeks go by and that’s the most important thing for us.”
