The 24-year-old has confirmed his intention to leave Colchester on the expiry of his contract at the end of his month.

There had been reports Rovers were one of the clubs interested in Stevenson, who made 97 appearances for the U’s and previously played for Coventry City.

But the Free Press understands such speculation is wide of the mark with the midfielder not among those players identified by Rovers boss Richie Wellens for his new look squad.

It is also understood Rovers will not be moving to sign former loanee Josh Sims following his departure from Southampton this summer.

The 24-year-old had two spells on loan with Rovers last season and impressed greatly during his first stint in particular.

Sims’ wage expectations are likely to price Rovers out of a move for him.
