Grant McCann makes his first return to Hull City tonight when Doncaster Rovers take on the Tigers in the Carabao Cup first round.

McCann joined Hull from Doncaster in the summer 2019 and spent two years at the helm until his dismissal in January last year following a takeover.

Hull were relegated from the Championship in McCann’s first season in charge but bounced back decisively as they won League One the following year.

McCann will be hoping to fare better when Doncaster visit the MKM Stadium.

Both sides lost on the opening day of the season last weekend.

Rovers were beaten 1-0 at home to Harrogate Town, while Liam Rosenior’s Tigers conceded in the 96th minute as they lost 2-1 at Norwich.

Simulation, we think. Must be down to the new rules.

Oscar Estupinan converts from close range with three minutes gone. Rovers gave the ball away in their own half, which created the chance. Lawlor saved an initial effort from inside the box before the Columbian striker turned home.

Rovers have gone 4-4-2 (we think)

Luke Molyneux is playing alongside, or just off, George Miller.

Hull get us started with Doncaster - in their home colours - kicking towards about 1,000 travelling fans.

SIX changes for Doncaster

Ian Lawlor, James Maxwell, Tom Anderson, Joseph Olowu, Luke Molynuex, George Broadbent, George Miller, Harrison Biggins, Owen Bailey, Deji Sotona, Tyler Roberts

Subs: Rory Watson, Jon Taylor, Tommy Rowe, Adam Long, Jack Senior, Reo Griffiths, Zain Westbrooke, Bobby Faulkner

A few rules and regulations to be aware of:

- No extra time. Straight to penalties if the teams can’t be seperated after 90 minutes.

- The round two draw takes place tomorrow night after Burton Albion’s game against Leicester City on Sky Sports. As mentioned, 12 Premier League teams to enter and the competition will remain regionalised until round three.

Round two ties will take place week commencing 28 August.

- Nine subs allowed each, of which five can be brought on. Teams will have three opportunities to make changes throughout the match (not including half-time)

- New timekeeping rules in place. In short, expect more yellow cards, potentially, and more added time.

It’s been a little while since Doncaster enjoyed a cup run (they exited every cup competition at the first stage last season), so we’re definitely overdue an upset or two. Grant McCann has been clear: he’s taking the cup competitions seriously this season, albeit to varying degrees.

The Carabao Cup probably comes third behind the FA Cup and Papa Johns in terms of importance but it’s still an opportunity for Rovers to cause a shock and earn a money-spinning tie in the next round, when the 12 Premier League Clubs not competing in European competitions enter.

Tonight is also a chance for both teams to get their respective seasons off and running with a win. Expect a few changes for Doncaster, but they will still be strong at the MKM Stadium.
