Getting to know Omar Bogle: A profile of Doncaster Rovers' latest signing

Here we take a look at the career so far of the striker.

NAME: Omar Hanif Bogle

BORN: July 26, 1992, Sandwell, West Midlands

A BIT OF EVERYTHING

Bogle’s biggest attributes are his physicality and height, which has seen him become adept at holding the ball up and bringing others into play. He is also good with the ball at his feet.

HE HAD A NOMADIC JUNIOR CAREER

Bogle started his football journey in the academy of his local club West Bromwich Albion before switching to Birmingham City as a 16-year-old. His final stint in an academy was on a trial basis at Celtic.

FIRST STOP - NON-LEAGUE

The striker’s senior career began with Hinckley United in the National League North where he netted three goals in eight appearances over a two month spell. At the start of the 2012/13 season, he joined Solihull Moors, also in the National League North. He spent three years with Moors, winning the division’s player of the year and golden boot in his final season, when he scored 29 goals. Bogle later admitted that it was a shock to the system to find himself dropping into non-league but he was determined to work harder than anyone else to fight his way into the EFL.

CAREER ACCELERATES

Then-National League Grimsby Town secured the services of the striker against plenty of competition in the summer of 2015. He scored 16 goals in his first season at Blundell Park, including two in the National League play-off final as Grimsby secured their return to the Football League. In the first half of his first season in League Two, he emerged as one of the hottest talents in the lower leagues of English by scoring 19 goals in 27 appearances.

ON THE MOVE

His incredible start to Football League life saw him secure a switch to Championship side Wigan Athletic. He scored three goals in 14 appearances.

AND AGAIN

Just eight months later Bogle was signed by Cardiff City for a reported £700,000 and handed a three-year deal. Over his three years, he made 24 appearances for the Bluebirds and scoring four goals.

RUN OF LOANS

Bogle spent the final few months of the 17/18 season on loan with Peterborough United in League One, scoring one goal in nine appearances. It was the first of a spate of loans for the striker, the second being a half season spell back at Birmingham City which delivered one goal in 19 appearances. In January 2019 he joined Portsmouth on loan and enjoyed a more productive spell with five goals in 19 appearances, including one against Rovers in a draw at Fratton Park. Finally he spent the remaining weeks of the 19/20 season in the Netherlands with ADO Den Haag where he managed five games before Covid-19 halted the campaign.

ANOTHER SHORT SPELL

Charlton snapped up Bogle following his release by Cardiff last summer. He made 17 appearances for the Addicks in the first half of this season, with 12 starts and two goals.

WHAT THEY SAID

Former Rovers striker - and Bogle’s ex-team mate at Solihull - Darren Byfield: “He can dribble, hold the ball up, scores headers, scores with his right foot, scores with his left foot. He's got it all.”

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer: “He’s good at everything, his all-around game as a striker is really good. He will be a very good striker in this division.”

Former Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock: “He’s a good lad; he wears funny clothes at times but he’s a good lad and I just think he needs pushing. He’s worked hard to get where he is, he’s looking more confident, looking at the way we play and contributing to that and I think he’s enjoying himself, I think there’s more to come from him.”
