Gomes suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury after making his return to action in the FA Cup tie at Carlisle United in late November.

While he was expected to make significant progress in his comeback at the turn of the year, the enforced spell away from the training ground due to the Covid-19 outbreak at the club slowed his recovery.

The entire squad was required to self isolate after five players tested positive for coronavirus ahead of the scheduled Boxing Day clash with Accrington Stanley.

“He’s doing well,” Moore told the Free Press.

“The lockdown period has hindered his comeback because during that ten day period he would have been in training and you’d have probably seen him integrated in with the rest of the squad at this point.

“But because he’s been that isolation period like everyone else he’s stood still a little bit.

“We have got to make sure we fire him back up again but that’s just taking a bit of time.

“Even though he’s making wonderful progress we don’t want to rush him back. We want him to come back and stay back.”

Moore added that he expects Gomes to be close to a return by the end of the month.

The Spanish midfielder has made only one appearance since mid-October after suffering his initial hamstring injury.

Prior to that he had started each of Rovers’ ten matches, scoring four goals.
