The 21-year-old was released by Rovers last summer as part of the decision to disband the club’s U23s set up amid the financial pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Watters trained with Maidstone United following his release and after playing in a friendly against Crawley Town in September, the League Two club snapped him up.

He hit the goal trail quickly - ultimately finishing with 16 goals in 18 appearances for Crawley - and began to attract attention from higher up the football pyramid.

And Championship side Cardiff won the race, agreeing a deal that could rise to seven figures based on add-on clauses.

Watters made six senior appearances for Rovers and was part of a further ten matchday squads, all coming last season. He joined from Ashford United in the summer of 2018 as Darren Ferguson’s final signing before leaving the club.
