Ex-Doncaster Rovers and Huddersfield Town boss Danny Schofield lands new role amid Leeds United reunion

The Free Press understands Schofield, who was dismissed by Rovers in May, is working alongside ex-MK Dons chief Mark Jackson at Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners.

A source close to Jackson confirmed he brought Schofield in as his assistant head coach following his appointment last month, although the move has yet to be officially announced.

The pair previously worked together at Leeds United, where they coached in the club’s development set-up.

Schofield's former Whites colleague Andres Clavijo, who served as Marcelo Bielsa’s translator as well as the club’s first team performance analyst, is also now working for the Mariners.

Clavijo’s job is listed as first team second assistant on his LinkedIn profile.

The Mariners won the A-League Grand Final under former Sheffield United midfielder Nick Montgomery in June.

Montgomery led the club to their second A-League Championship, and their first in a decade, before leaving in September to join Scottish Premiership side Hibernian as their new head coach.

Doncaster sacked Schofield following their lowest league finish in 20 years, which saw them finish 18th in League Two last season.

The former Huddersfield head coach, from Hexthorpe, lost 19 of his 33 games in charge of his hometown club.

Schofield, who replaced Gary McSheffrey in October 2022, kept Rovers within touching distance of the play-offs for much of the campaign.

But the team's form tailed off considerably in the final few months when injuries to several key first-team players exposed the squad’s lack of strength in depth and budgetary constraints.

Leeds-born Jackson, who also played for his hometown club, was sacked from his role as head coach of MK Dons following their relegation to League Two on the final day of last season.

He registered just six wins in 25 games during his five months in charge after leaving his role as Leeds’ first-team coach to take the job.

Jackson’s tenure at the Mariners began in style with a 9-1 win over Filipino outfit Stallion FC in the AFC (Asian Football Confederation) Cup.

But their title defence got off to a bad start at the weekend when they were beaten 3-0 away to Adelaide United on the league’s opening night.

Central Coast Mariners did not respond to a request for comment.
