Doncaster Rovers travel to Leicester City this weekend, marking the first meeting between the two teams since the final day of the 2013/14 Championship campaign.
It was a sunny afternoon in May at the King Power Stadium with David Nugent’s second-half penalty proving the difference between two sides which were moving in very different directions.
Donny’s failure to win at Leicester resulted in Paul Dickov’s side dropping immediately back to League One after Paul Caddis’ dramatic 93rd minute equaliser against Bolton secured Birmingham City’s Championship status in the most dramatic of circumstances.
The afternoon saw Leicester celebrate their return to the top-flight for the first time in a decade by winning the Championship title - marking the start of an unforgettable era for the football club, who’d be crowned Premier League winners in 2016 and FA Cup winners five years after that.
Rovers haven’t competed in the Championship since that afternoon at the King Power. While Leicester, who have experienced a real fall from grace, are in the third-tier for the first time since 2009.
Here we take a look back at the Doncaster Rovers XI that faced Leicester City that day - and what they got up to since leaving DN4.
1. Sam Johnstone - Celtic
Sam Johnstone joined Doncaster Rovers on loan from Man Utd, with the first-choice goalkeeper Ross Turnbull injured. He returned for a brief spell in League One before eventually going on to play for Aston Villa, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Wolves. The four-time England international is currently on loan at Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
2. Gabriel Tamas - retired
Sporting an eye mask for this one, experienced Romanian defender Gabriel Tamas joined the club on a free transfer having previously played for West Brom. He later joined Watford and had spells with a series of clubs in Romania before retiring in 2023. He's now ASA Târgu Mureș sporting director. 4. Abdoulaye Meite - retired
Ivory Coast international Abdoulaye Meite made 16 appearances for Rovers during a six-month spell in DN4. The former Marseille and West Brom defender went on to play for OFI Crete, Ross County and Newport County among others before retiring in 2017.
