‘Little bit sloppy’ - Doncaster Rovers striker Will Keane shares his assessment of Stockport County loss

Doncaster Rovers striker Will Keane believes there’s plenty to work on after his side’s 2-0 loss to Stockport County

Will Keane says Doncaster Rovers need to do better as a team following Tuesday’s 2-0 home loss to league leaders Stockport County.

The striker, who was signed in the build-up to the Leicester City loss on a short-term deal, appeared as a second half substitute against Stockport, in a game which marked his home debut in Red and White.

Reflecting on the result, Keane said: “It was frustrating. I don't think we really got going in the game, but at half-time, we were still in the match, and then it's disappointing to concede a couple of soft goals. iI’s been a couple of set plays in the last few games, which we need to put right.

“They're a good enough team as it is, we can't give them soft goals like that, so we need to do better as a team, we know that. And even the penalty, Tommy's obviously made a great save, and we’re disappointing not to react first, so yeah, that makes it difficult and like I said, the way they play, they can take the sting out of the contest at that point and just control the game.”

Keane came on to the pitch at a time when Rovers were trailing by two goals and struggling to gain any momentum, that remained very much the theme in the final 20 minutes despite the striker making a few nice touches.

He added: “We just were a little bit sloppy at times, and so then if they keep the ball from you and you’re chasing it, it’s a hard thing when you get the ball back.

“We didn’t then manage to get up the pitch enough as a team and create.

“Cheap goals really. For all that play, they didn’t take any of the chances in open play, and it’s too easy for them.”

Keane, who is still gaining match sharpness, having been without a club for the entirety of the summer, will hope to make an impact against Sheffield Wednesday in his side’s next match.

The 33-year-old, who had a brief spell at Hillsborough 11 years ago, said: “It’s a big derby and a good chance just to put it right.

“We want to get back to winning ways, especially at home, and we know we could have done a lot better tonight.

“We need a good reaction, we need to recover. It’s a great opportunity for us to go out there and give our all in front of the fans and hope we can get a win.”
