Doncaster Rovers suffered a 2-1 defeat against promotion hopefuls Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in a match which marked the first meeting between the two sides in 12 years.
Grant McCann made two changes to the team that ran out 1-0 winners against Burton Albion last weekend. Tom Nixon came in to replace the injured Jordan Thomas in the left wing-back role while Isaac Hutchinson was handed an opportunity to start in a central attacking midfield position in place of Brandon Hanlan. There was also a first appearance on the bench for new signing Will Keane after the experienced striker signed a short-term deal with the club.
Doncaster Rovers made a positive start to the game, producing a number of threatening crosses which were either forced into corners or at the very least causing problems for Leicester City goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. However, it was the hosts that were the more potent in the final third, forcing Tommy Simkin into a few decent saves, before eventually opening the scoreline on the stroke of half-time through an excellent volley from ex-Rovers loanee John Lundstram.
The Foxes took control of proceedings in the early stages of the second half with Kamari Doyle doubling the hosts advantage with a fine curled effort. It left Russell Martin’s side in the driving seat and looking set for a comfortable victory. However, as McCann shuffled the pack with his changes, Rovers began to show renewed optimism, with Hanlan making an impact from the bench by assisting Alfie May’s late goal from close range.
Ultimately, it proved too little with the Foxes running out 2-1 winners in the end.
Here are our player ratings from Doncaster Rovers’ trip to Leicester City.
5. George Broadbent - 5
Made a really important intervention to stop a Leicester counter in the first-half. But failed to win the midfield battle. | Howard Roe AHPIX LTD [email protected] 07973739229
6. Owen Bailey - 6
Doncaster Rovers fans are still waiting to see the best of skipper Owen Bailey. He didn't have a bad game by any means but he's not hitting the heights of last season at this moment. | Howard Roe AHPIX LTD 07973739229 [email protected]

7. Robbie Gotts - 6
Should have perhaps been closer to Lundstram for Leicester's opening goal. He worked hard and made a fair few tackles but wasn't a standout. | Craig Hawkhead/AHPIX LTD
8. Tom Nixon - 6
Put in a shift on his first start of the league season. Still looks like he's getting up to speed but didn't do too bad in an unfamilar role. | Howard Roe AHPIX LTD 07973739229 [email protected]
