Doncaster Rovers man Jack Senior on adding goals to his game and the positives to build on after Stevenage
Goalscorer Jack Senior’s assessment on Doncaster Rovers’ 2-2 draw with Stevenage
Doncaster Rovers goalscorer Jack Senior says that it’s important for the team to take the positives from the second half at Stevenage following an eventful 2-2 draw in Hertfordshire.
Rovers started the game on the back foot against a side that defied expectations to reach the play-offs last season.
Grant McCann’s side went behind through Josh Magennis' strike in the 57th minute, but showed real determination to get back into the game with Senior registering his second goal of the season to kickstart the comeback with a fine strike from outside the penalty area, before Owen Bailey’s header gave Rovers a brief two-minute advantage which was quickly cancelled out by substitute Olly Sanderson’s equaliser.

Reflecting on the game as a whole, Senior told BBC Sheffield: “I think it was probably a game of two halves, really. I think we knew what they were about coming into the game. They like to put it on our back line, kind of play for territory and get up the pitch and stick it on us, really.
“And I think we had a game plan and it wasn't working too well in terms of we wanted to get the ball down and play through the thirds and I think they kind of nullified us through it a little bit, but not through the want of trying, but then we just kind of addressed a few things at half-time and made a few tweaks and then I think second half, I thought we were brilliant, to be honest.
“I thought there was a real impetus about us, a real positivity to go and take the game to them and, you know, obviously disappointing to go one down, but the reaction that we showed was very good to go ahead.

“From then, as a defender talking, it's a case of maybe seeing the game out and it's just a shame that it's two set pieces, really, because this is a team that kind of got a lot of points last year through set pieces and we spoke about that at length in the preparations for the game.”
Senior has now scored in both of his first two away matches in the league this season - an impressive statistic for a defender, particularly when bearing in mind that prior to the season starting the 28-year-old had never scored a league goal for the Rovers.
When discussing his new found goalscoring form, Senior admitted that it’s something he’s been working on during pre-season. However, he was keen not to give too much away on what he’s been doing behind the scenes to improve that particular aspect of his game.

Senior explained: “Yeah, I think I have little things that I probably want to keep in-house. Sometimes it's maybe a bit of a way, I don't want to speak it into existence, you know, kind of, because there's a few things that I've kind of worked on on the pitch, away from the football, away from the football club that is, you know, that I've been working on and, you know, sorry to kind of ruin your question by not letting you in on it.
“It's something that 's been a lot of work that I've done and I want to kind of keep that to myself and my family and stuff and just hoping it can continue really because the main thing is the team.
“It's not really about me. If I can bring something to the team in whichever way, shape or form, then that's what I'm striving for every game, really.”
