Doncaster Rovers: Grant McCann gets tough as he targets the top

Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann is known to emphasise the positives but he admits he has taken a tougher approach to push his side to the next level.

McCann typically does not dwell on aspects of games which may not have gone well and instead prefers to show his players what they have done right.

But as he looks to push Rovers on following their impressive 3-2 win at Rochdale last weekend, McCann is focused only on improvement.

“On Monday I went the other way with them a bit,” McCann said.

“I usually show them some positive stuff with the videos but I showed them some stuff that we need to work on.

“To be the best in the league, they need to see that.

“We were quite frank with them.

“We all want to be the best in the league. We all want to get to that top point at some stage this season.

“To go along the way we are going along is fine to keep you in the top six but we want to be better than that.

“It was important that we worked on that on Monday and Tuesday, straight after the meetings and we will continue to work on it through this week as well.”

McCann insists he has seen an extra bounce in his players’ steps following the victory at Rochdale last weekend.

Rovers recovered from back-to-back league defeats to triumph 3-2 at Spotland in a battling performance.

“I thought the boys trained really well on Tuesday and I would say it’s probably one of the best training sessions we've had since we've been here,” he said.

“It was the intensity, the attitude, the application of it and to perfect what we’re trying to work on as well.

“It was tough, it was hard and it was demanding. It was intense and it wasn’t for long.

“We made sure we got all of those components in and it’s the way we train with our reactions, the way we keep and move the ball.

“I was really, really pleased with it.”

Centre half Joe Wright is fully fit despite leaving the field at the final whistle at Spotland clutching his arm.
