Doncaster Rovers were knocked out of the League Cup after falling to a 3-1 defeat against Championship side Middlesbrough

Doncaster Rovers hopes of a cup run were dashed on Tuesday night when they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Championship hopefuls Middlesbrough in DN4.

A total of 6,883 fans were in attendance for the first match under the lights of the new season with the Championship side making their presence known with 2,942 supporters.

Rovers made the brighter start of the two teams - creating the lion’s share of chances in the first 30 minutes before Middlesbrough switched up a gear, taking the lead through Kyle Joseph in the first half before Will Lankshear and Jeremy Sarmiento furthered the visitors' advantage.

After a goalless draw at Barnsley at the weekend, Rovers fans did at least get to celebrate their first goal on home soil of the new season, with summer signing Isaac Hutchinson getting himself on the scoresheet with a consolation in added time.

Ultimately, it wasn’t to be for Rovers but there were some positives to take from the encounter which they’ll hope to build on in the coming weeks.

Our photographer Howard Roe snapped some of the home supporters in attendance on Tuesday evening. Check out our gallery below to see if you can spot anyone you know.
