Doncaster Rovers will have to wait until next season to break eye-raising club record

The way things are going right now, nobody associated with Doncaster Rovers wants the season to end.

A few months back the picture was pretty grim but a barnstorming run of results has them on the precipice of the League Two play-offs.

They have strung together eight consecutive victories and chances are if they continue it for the final three games of the season then they'll be in the end-of-season lottery - against all expectations entirely.

The aforementioned run that Grant McCann's side have put together is the club's best since winning 10 in a row between November 1946 and April 1947 (the first campaign following the Second World War).

Form on home soil has been key to the run and it's probably gone under the radar that Rovers have actually won seven on the spin at the Eco-Power Stadium.

After being torn apart in late January by Stockport County, McCann's men have gone on to rack up wins over Tranmere, Wimbledon, Crewe, Forest Green, Wrexham, Walsall and Accrington Stanley.

Saturday sees them host Barrow in their final home game of the regular season. But even a win there would not see them set a new club record for consecutive league wins at home.

That tally stands at nine and stretches back more than 20 years.

As per the research of Doncaster Rovers fan and sports historian John Coyle, Rovers put together a run of nine straight home wins between September 20, 2003 and January 10, 2004. That season saw them go up as fourth tier champions.

Even if Rovers do overcome Barrow and then win their play-off semi-final leg at home, they'll still have to wait for the 2024-25 season to begin if they are to overtake that particular record and make it into double figures.
