The club have been in talks with multiple players for the position for the last few weeks but the Rovers recruitment team believe a deal is close to being completed for their number one choice.

Wellens has put strong focus on putting together his defence in the early stages of the transfer window and last week secured right back Kyle Knoyle and centre half Ro-Shaun Williams on two year deals.

He has been keen to recruit a new left back following Reece James’ departure to Blackpool and looks to have secured the final key piece to his defence.

The target is understood to have been in high demand but has been sold on Wellens’ vision for the side and his part in it.

The player can operate in multiple positions and has a wealth of experience.

Wellens met with several transfer targets late last week as he plots the next phase of his recruitment drive.

Rovers have also made significant progress with several potential loan signings for the new campaign.

It is understood agreements have been reached with clubs over temporary signings for the new campaign with those deals likely to be confirmed closer to the start of the new campaign.
