Sheffield Wednesday will join Doncaster Rovers in League One next season – but their preparations for the campaign have been overshadowed by a long-running wage dispute.

The Sheffield Star reported recently that – as per FIFA rules – a number of Owls players were considering handing in their 15-day notice after going unpaid once again last month.

They would have been allowed to walk out of Hillsborough and seek new clubs as free agents.

Subsequent reports over the weekend have since claimed that the Professional Footballers Association are now involved in the wage dispute, with Sky Sports claiming that players have not been paid in full or on time in over three months.

This is not the first time that the PFA have reportedly contacted the club, with the union thought to have written to the club's owner Dejphon Chansiri for clarity over when the outstanding payments will reach the players.

But the situation could soon be resolved, with the Star now claiming ‘promising news’ could be on the horizon.

They say that the wage dispute is being treated as the top priority at Hillsborough at present, with Chansiri keen to ‘put the matter to bed’.

Wednesday have been installed as one of the early favourites to win promotion from League One this term, with the Owls priced at 8/1 to win the division next term. Sunderland are current favourites at 7/1.

Darren Moore’s side are unlikely to spend big this summer though, with loans and free transfers likely to be the order of the day.
