Doncaster Rovers coach departs after less than a year as club legend steps up to first team role

Barry Richardson has left Doncaster Rovers after less than a year back at the club.

The 56-year-old returned to Rovers last summer as a first team coach having previously been a goalkeeping specialist. He joined Grant McCann's team ahead of the 2025-26 campaign but the club have now confirmed Richardson, a former Rovers player and who started his coaching journey at the club more than 20 years ago, has left the role to "pursue a new opportunity".

He said: "I’ve had a great experience and I’ve really enjoyed working with the club, the staff and the players. It’s been an invaluable experience and I’ve learned plenty. It’s just the right time for me to move on. I’m looking to get back north to spend more time with my parents who are both ill. I’d like to thank Grant, Cliff, the staff, players and supporters for their support in my time back at the club.”

Manager McCann added that: “We had an agreement if a role came up back in goalkeeper coaching then we wouldn’t stand in his way, and that is the case.”

Richardson's place on the senior staff has been taken up by under-18s head coach Paul Green - a popular player among supporters during his playing days. The club say Green will "join the senior coaching staff for the remainder of the season" although it's unclear if a permanent replacement for Richardson will be made.
