Darren Moore has labelled Andy Butler’s experience and enthusiasm within his Doncaster Rovers squad as invaluable and says it was a major reason why the centre half was handed a contract extension.

With his initial short term deal due to expire this month, Butler has signed a new deal until the end of the season with the option for another year.

The Doncaster-born veteran had to wait until November to make his re-debut for the club but impressed Moore with his desire to contribute both on and off the pitch.

“He’s done really, really well,” Moore told the Free Press

“He’s been fit, he’s been patient and champing at the bit.

“When he stepped in and did the management side when I was in isolation, all he wanted to do was play. When he played against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he just wanted to know how he’d done and my review on his game.

“He just looks like a kid playing and enjoying his football.

“But he’s got wonderful experience, wonderful know-how and testament to him and his physical conditioning because he’s a really strong man.

“His talking and organisation on the pitch are invaluable for the younger ones, and it’s valuable for them to have an experienced pro like him on the pitch to marshall them.

“We’ve been delighted with him and that is why we want to extend his deal until the end of the season.”

Butler made his first league start of the season at Northampton Town in early December and has kept his place ever since.

“He’s been really good and he’s formed a really solid partnership with Tom, as he would with anyone because of his experience,” Moore said.

“It’s great to see him in the team and doing well.

“We spoke all about all the players being ready fit and available because the games have come with such a short turnaround, fatigue can set in , you can pick up knocks, pick up niggles, and injuries. At a split second, someone else has to step in.

“Because Joe [Wright] had the injury, Andy had to step in and it was water off a duck’s back with how he slotted right in.

“He knows how we work, he knows the team dynamics and he’s been a real good solid player for us.”
