Rotherham United's Michael Ihiekwe and Wycombe Wanderers’ Joe Jacobson both made the starting XI while fellow League One players Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth), James Henry (Oxford United) and Fankaty Dabo (Coventry City) joined Whiteman among the substitutes.

Rovers boss Darren Moore says the recognition for the 23-year-old is very much deserved.

He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news.

"It’s incredible for him to be nominated with the Championship players, with the array of talent there, to be nominated for the EFL Team of the Season – it’s massive. Huge plaudits for Ben.

“Ben has epitomised why we have made him the skipper and asked him to lead the team this season. His leadership skills on and off the field have been crucial and he’s played his part towards what has been a positive season for Doncaster Rovers thus far.

“For him to get recognition in the Team of the Season So Far shows in volumes the maturity of the performances that he’s been showing over the course of the season - credit to him.

“We’re all pleased and delighted - his performances have been up there with some of the best midfielders in the division and we believe we have one of the best midfielders in the division in Ben.”
