‘Forget what other people have said - just show us what you can do.’

The Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder himself admits to having been dogged by questions over his work rate and application in recent years.

And he says he is immensely grateful to Darren Moore for taking a chance on him this season despite the doubts that had been cast over him.

From Moore’s perspective, he saw little risk and the potential for great reward in Richards, and felt confident he could provide him with the environment that would allow his undoubted quality to flourish.

“We’re still working to see the best of what he can do,” the Rovers boss told the Free Press. “It’s giving him the platform.

“When we went for him I told him he’d be given a platform where he could perform and find consistency and also that he’d be joining a squad where he’d have a role and a responsibility.

“For a young player, he wants to develop, grow and play football. A footballer is happiest when he is on the pitch and playing games - and scoring goals as well, that’s the icing on the cake.

“Without a doubt I knew the talent he had and what we wanted was to bring that here because it suits the way we want to play.

“But we also wanted to nurture that talent and bring it out of him on a consistent basis. That’s what we’re working towards here now.

“Irrespective of what people may have said about him before, when you come to Doncaster Rovers the slate is wiped clean and it’s an opportunity, after people have made assumptions about you, for you to go about your business in a quiet way.

“I think he’s doing that at the moment.”

Richards netted a stunning solo effort in Saturday’s win over Oxford United, taking his personal tally to six goals for the season and three in as many games.

There are still times when his work rate comes into question. He was largely anonymous during the first half at the weekend, only to start the second in explosive fashion with an assist and a goal.

The doubts have largely been washed away by the positive impact he has had on Rovers this season - and his growing importance in the side.

A player who can make something happen from nothing, who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and wrestle control single-handedly.

It was such a player that Moore saw worth handing a chance to.

And he feels taking Richards out of his comfort zone in U23s football would be the making of him.

“It’s about having a responsibility to work with his team mates and getting into the team,” he said. “He’s working with them on a daily basis.

“Long may it continue that he keeps getting better. I’m sure he would say that there is plenty more to come from him with the continuation of improvement.”
