Darren Moore talks future of U23s group at Doncaster Rovers after raft of releases

The rebuilding of a strong first team squad at Doncaster Rovers will take priority over the continued existence of an Under 23s group at the club, Darren Moore has revealed.

Rovers released six players from the U23 squad this week, handing new deals only to AJ Greaves, Danny Amos and Louis Jones.

It raised questions over the future of the age group within Rovers’ structure and Moore admits its status has not been fully finalised as the club navigates through the financial challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It all depends, looking at the first team,” Moore told the Free Press when asked whether the U23s group would continue.

“First things first, we have to make sure that the first team squad is as strong as it can be.

“There is going to be a lot of good young players out there. If there is a young player that would be a really strong prospect for the club going forward, we would look into it.

“But we’re looking to put together a squad of young and experienced players who will combine as one to take us through the season.

“Decisions are being made because of these last three or four months in terms of clubs at our level.”

It is understood that should Rovers not proceed with an official U23s group, they would continue to field a side in competition at the level.

Scaling back the development group is not unprecedented for Rovers, having last done so following relegation to League Two in 2016.
