Darren Moore on new contract offers at Doncaster Rovers

Darren Moore says it ‘would be the wrong thing to do’ right now to offer new deals to those Doncaster Rovers players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

Key men Joe Wright, Brad Halliday and Reece James are among the players whose contracts will expire in the summer.

Typically contract talks would have commenced with players the club were keen to retain.

But Moore says the uncertainty arising due to the financial pressures from the Covid-19 crisis means it would be unwise to pursue new deals at this stage, and that has been part of the learning curve of the unprecedented current campaign.

“It’s because of the situation that we’re in,” he said.

“To offer players contracts now would be the wrong thing to do, especially with the situation what has happened.

Football is like no other industry. Twenty four hours in football is a long time.

“Four weeks ago we had to shut down the training ground and we had four games called off.

“That has changed the balance of the season. We’ve had to change the dynamics of it.

“We’re working under different parameters because of what has happened.

“This season I’ve had to have an open mind and be ready to react and manoeuvre to what has been given or thrown our way.

“That is what we’ve been trying to do and it will take a massive group effort.”

Though their initial deals expire at the end of the season, Rovers have the option of extending the contracts of Jon Taylor, Jason Lokilo and Andy Butler for another year.
