Background on Doncaster Rovers' link with Manchester United starlet

The Manchester Evening News reports that Rovers are set to face stiff competition from Championship sides Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday to land the 19-year-old.

The Free Press understands that informal expressions of interest were made when Garner played against Rovers for United’s U21s side in the Leasing.com Trophy in October.

But given the speed of his progress subsequently this season, Rovers fully expect that Garner will be loaned to a Championship club for the 2020/21 campaign.

The midfielder himself is thought to have told Rovers officials in October that he saw the Keepmoat as an ideal loan destination after being impressed by the style of play and culture implemented by boss Darren Moore.

United coaching staff are also said to have been impressed by the manner in which loanees are handled at Rovers, both with opportunities for game time and the way in which many have progressed during their spells.

Garner is one of the top prospects in United’s age group set up with U23s boss Neil Wood convinced he is fully ready for a loan move. He netted nine goals in 12 appearances for the U23s last season and skippered the side also.

He has made seven senior appearances for United, including three starts in this season’s Europa League.Swansea are thought to be the front-runners, given Garner has previously worked with manager Steve Cooper when he was in charge of England U17s.
