Doncaster Knights: Griffiths targeting ‘three or four more wins’ for survival

Despite going into Sunday’s derby game against Rotherham at Castle Park on the back of five successive Championship defeats, the Welshman remains positive.

“We’ve been fantastic in the B&I Cup, I can’t fault the players, they’ve been fantastic,” said Griffiths.

“But we’ve got to get ourselves back on the horse in the Championship.

“We’ve also got to start picking up more bonus points in games that we lose.”

Although Knights have dropped from fourth to 11th in the 12-team league, Griffiths believes that the club’s B&I Cup record shows they are capable of being competitive in the Championship.

“We need three or four wins in the second half of the season to be sure of staying up and I’m confident that the team can achieve that,” he said.

Titans may boast a better league record than Knights going into this weekend’s game but Griffiths knows the form book counts for nothing in derby games.

“Even though I’d rather us be going into the game on the back of a morale-boosting win, I wouldn’t be surprised if we beat Rotherham,” he said.

“The lads will certainly be up for it with it being a derby and the fact that it is live on Sky.

“But we’ve got to have our game management right from the off.

“What we did in the build-up to the Nottingham game was bang on, as was our game-plan, but unfortunately one or two players went away from what we had talked about and we got our backside spanked.

“In any sport there has got to be the right balance between the head and the heart.”
