What is an eternity ring?

An eternity ring says so much more than Happy Christmas, or even I love you, it’s a gift of everlasting love, commitment and gratitude.

It was the ancient Egyptians who, we believe, were the first civilisation to give eternity rings, offered as a token of both eternal love and life.

Eternity rings found from those times were a circle of metal set with stones either on the top half of the ring, or all the way round. And those designs persist today.

In the past some designs showed a serpent swallowing its own tail, symbolising infinity and the cycle of birth and death.

Today eternity rings are given as tokens of love, as gifts for significant anniversaries, the birth of a child, to mark a big life event or just as a way of telling someone they have your undying love. They are most often worn on the wedding ring finger, but because they are a stunning piece of versatile jewellery that suits any occasion, others prefer to wear them on another finger or the right hand.

Take time to choose

When you want to select just the right gift, you don’t want to be rushed. The experienced staff at family business H. L. Brown jewellers, of 18 St Sepulchre Gate, Frenchgate Centre, in Doncaster, appreciate that.

From the moment you walk through the doors you will be greeted by friendly staff, offered a drink and time to discuss and consider what you want to buy.

They carry a wide range of quality jewellery including eternity rings in a range of metals – white gold, yellow gold and platinum being the most popular.

Diamonds, they say, are a girl’s best friend and that’s true for eternity rings too. Whether they are brilliant cut, oval cut or baguette cut. However, other precious stones are popular too, such as rubies or sapphires, or a mixture of stones.

Centuries of tradition

Jewellery and watches have been sold by H L Brown in Doncaster since the 1920s . At that time it joined forces with Bell Brothers, a business established in 1791 by a well-respected watchmaker Joseph Bell, who worked for some time under the famous Thomas Mudge – appointed watchmaker to the King in 1776 and inventor of the detached lever escapement, which is used in nearly all mechanical watches today.

Following a full refurbishment in spring last year, the shop became known solely as H. L. Brown Doncaster. H. L. Brown is today run by the great-grandson of the original H. L. Brown founder.
