A small but serious dashcam focuses on clear footage, reliability and stealthy design rather than gimmicks or flashy features

Compact dashcams always have a habit of winning me over. The more stealthy and discreet they are, the better. That's why I was thrilled to be invited to test the new Viofo A119M, a small but mighty offering from one of my favourite dashcam brands.

The big headlines here, aside from the size, are the Sony Starvis 2 sensor, 4K recording, and HDR processing.

Sony's Starvis sensors are basically a gold standard for dashcams, and the latest tech on offer gives superb low-light performance, crisp detail, and fine resolution.

It's the small size that's its biggest selling point - but the image sensor is a massive plus, and puts it head and shoulders ahead of other small dashcamsplaceholder image

New to the A119M Pro is the addition of Wi-Fi 6, which makes pulling footage off the camera noticeably quicker than older models, especially if you’re dealing with chunky 4K files.

Aside from that, it's fair to say that some of the frills have been forgotten about in this dashcam, in favour of straight-forward functionality and Viofo's reputation for reliability.

There are no pointless gadgets, no trick software; you do get voice control but if you're anything like me you probably won't use it. And while there is a parking mode, and it works as well as you'd expect, you need to hardwire it, and the kit isn't included, so many people won't bother.

The difference between a standard sensor and a high-end sensor could be the difference between trying to read a number plate and losing it to the blurplaceholder image

The stripped back approach of the A119M Pro does help temper the price somewhat. It's still a premium product, but it comes in at a rather sensible £169.95. Although I've found one on AliExpress for £146.76 with free shipping, which is worth a look.

And at that money it's a very appealing prospect. Because what you're getting is a high-end dashcam with all the functionality you need, but none of the fussy gadgets you might not need.

And let's not forget its compact size. That's obviously its biggest selling point.

This is a dashcam for those who prefer function over form, and like to keep their dashcams discreet. It's my sort of thing completely, in fact. I really like it.
