Teenage volunteers from Barnsley FC’s National Citizenship Service (NCS) spent a week helping and assisting the elderly folk at Deangate Care Home.

The caring group of nine, 16 and 17 year olds, gave up their time for free to treat and look after residents and gave them a one-to-one pamper day, arts and crafts, bingo, gardening activities and much more.

The caring group also raised more than £360 through a tombola in Barnsley town centre and a foot weary eight-mile sponsored walk from Penistone to Barnsley FC’s football ground, Oakwell.

The money that was raised from the sponsored walk will be split between the Mapplewell home and Parkinson’s UK.

The nine teenage volunteers included Jack Hallows, 17, Josh Heald, 17, Lily Watson, 17, Florrie Higgins, 17, Kieran Brant, 16, Grace Taylor, 16, Sophie Stuchbery, 16, Saskia Freeman, 16, and 16-year-old, Sapphron Heppenstall.

Leader of the Barnsley FC National Citizenship Service group, Sarah Newsome, said: “The work at Deangate Care Home is part of the group’s Social Action project, which is one of six things they have to do within the NCS.

“They planned out a week full of different activities, such as bingo, singing, a pamper day and crafts, as well as ways to help the residents of the home, with things such as planting flowers in the garden.”

Home manager at Deangate Care Home, Jonathan Edwards, said: “It was a pleasure to have the NCS volunteers at the home for the week.

“Our residents thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the young people. It has a hugely positive effect on them, raising their spirits for days and weeks afterwards.

“We can’t thank the group enough for giving up their time and hope to welcome more groups from the Barnsley FC NCS in future.”
